Text: Luke 6.46-49
The day Zacchaeus met Jesus was a pivotal moment in his life. So much so, he was ready to make the major life changes of sharing his wealth and making amends with the people he cheated (Luke 19.8). Zacchaeus committed to making a complete U-turn and redirecting his future. Zacchaeus’ actions proved his belief in Jesus.
In his book Faith and Doubt, John Ortberg suggests a private belief is what you think you believe and a core belief is what you truly believe (revealed by what you do), much like the two builders in today’s story. One builds on a sandy foundation and the other on a rock foundation. We know Jesus is not just telling a story about construction strategies because he begins his parable with a question, “Why do you call me Lord, Lord, and do not do what I say?”
Jesus teaches we must be like the man who builds his house on hearing God’s word and doing what he says. If you want to be a true follower of Jesus, you need to take action as a way to prove you believe in him.
Perhaps you’ve accepted Jesus but you aren’t doing what he says. Make today a pivotal moment for you by doing a U-turn, like Zacchaeus. Tell Jesus what action you’re willing to take in order to listen and do what he says.
