February 4 | Silencing the Noise

February 4, 2015

Text: Luke 6.12-16

Jesus often withdrew to lonely places and prayed. Luke 5.16

Jesus’ life was full of noise: the crowds were vying for his attention, the Pharisees and religious leaders schemed against him, and his disciples often bickered with each another. But Jesus made a regular practice of silencing the noise. He chose to withdraw to spend time in prayer. One particular night, Jesus used the time he had and went off to a mountainside to quiet himself before his Father, eventually spending the entire night talking with God.

In this day and age, we have so many more things vying for our attention: the Internet, TV, smart phones, email, meetings, kids, and a whole slew of other noise. While it may be difficult to get away, it doesn’t mean we can’t make the choice. We always have the ability to turn it off, shut it down or put it away to spend time with God.

Maybe you’re not at the point where you want to spend an entire night praying to God, but simply choosing to silence the noise for a few more minutes a day could help you become more attentive as you learn from and listen to your Heavenly Father. Identify and turn off the noise(s) you need to silence as you spend intentional time with God today.
