June 3 | Encouragement

June 3, 2015

Text: Acts 11.22-24

When we’re where we don’t want to be it’s easy to give up. When we’re beaten down, weary, and discouraged, the temptation to “throw in the towel” can be huge. In the midst of the struggle, as we weigh all of the options, quitting often looks pretty good. It’s at these times we need a Barnabas.

We first meet Barnabas, whose real name is Joseph but who was known as the “son of encouragement,” in Acts 4. Apparently, as church leaders heard what was happening, they knew the believers needed “a good man, full of the Holy Spirit and faith” (Acts 11.24).

They needed encouragement, they needed Barnabas. Knowing his task, Barnabas “encouraged them all to remain true to the Lord with all their hearts” (Acts 11.23).

Hang in there, keep at it, stay the course. Don’t quit. We can never hear these words enough. Today, find someone who needs to hear these words and be Barnabas to them. Make the commitment to be their Barnabas for as long as necessary.
