Beyond the Weekend

June 8 | God-Directed Movement

June 8, 2015

Text: Acts 13.1-4

Barnabas and Saul (later known as Paul) probably start their day expecting to go about their plans as they do every day. That is, until the Holy Spirit introduces a stark new direction for their lives. “While they were worshipping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, ‘Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them’” (Acts 13.2). Suddenly, Barnabas and Saul are on a special God-directed mission to share the gospel message wherever the Holy Spirit directs (Acts 13.4).

Pastor Jeff Manion showed us how God can initiate a new movement in our lives. This is different than deciding on a New Year’s resolution or some self-improvement decision. God-directed movements are seasons when God takes us somewhere new and often requires us to walk by faith into unknown territory.

Responding to God’s movement in our lives is no small matter. As God introduces new opportunities in our lives, he desires for us to respond by faith, like Barnabas and Saul did. It might not be easy, but God is sure to use each opportunity to help craft us to be more like Jesus.

Consider this week’s One Big Question: When have you responded to God-directed movement in your life? As you share this with your small group or a friend, discuss the challenges and process of discerning God’s voice, how you moved your plans to match his, and how God showed himself faithful. Let your stories encourage each other to move boldly into the plans God has for us.
