Text: Acts 14.1-6
As Paul and Barnabas spend extended time in Iconium, opposition begins to mount (Acts 14.2). In response, God confirms “the message of his grace” (Acts 14.3) by doing miracles through them.
We often think of miracles as outstanding events that are unusual or highly unlikely. We’re reminded of sportscaster Al Michaels’ famous quote about the U.S. hockey team’s 1980 victory over the highly-favored Soviet Union, “Do you believe in miracles? Yes!” But teamwork, talent, and great coaching won that game, not the supernatural intervention of God. In the Bible, miracles are supernatural events—brought about by God—outside of normal reality. They’re signs given by him that authenticate his power, character, and intentions. They’re meant to draw us to him.
In his gospel, the Apostle John refers to miracles as “signs.” Jesus used miracles to clarify his identity as the One from God whose coming was prophesied in the Old Testament. As you spend time with God today, read and memorize John 20.30-31 as the foundation for true miracles. Miracles of God will always lead us to him and increase our faith.
