August 11 | Sabbath Rest

August 11, 2015

Text: Deuteronomy 5.12-15

The command to observe the Sabbath is one of the least understood of the Ten Commandments. In fact, many of us may not have realized it’s right up there with “You shall not murder” and “You shall not commit adultery.”  So understanding, “why Sabbath?” is a pretty big deal.

The command for Sabbath shows up in two places, Exodus 20.8-11 and Deuteronomy 5.12-15. The directives are the same in each: work six days of the week, but on the seventh you will rest, along with all of your household. But Sabbath is more than just a weekly break from work. In the above passages the impetus behind why we practice Sabbath is God’s creation act and God’s deliverance of the Israelites from Egypt—two things only God can do. The reason we observe the Sabbath is to recognize God is truly in control and to reconnect with him.

Regularly practicing Sabbath is a way of placing our trust in God. And in doing so, we experience genuine peace and rest. Perhaps one reason you may be experiencing anxiety is because you think you’re too busy to set aside your laptop and take some restful time alone with God. Troubles will always be looming, so step out of the business to meet with God and rest in his power.
