August 13 | God Our Shepherd

August 13, 2015

Text: Psalm 23
Psalm 23 is perhaps the most famous of the Psalms. King David, leaning on his experience as a shepherd boy, tells how God is the shepherd and we are the sheep. The psalm leads us through the pleasantness of green pastures and still waters to the trepidation of “the darkest valley” and being surrounded by enemies.

Through it all, the theme is constant: God is always present. For David, it was God who was blessing in green pastures, comforting in the shadow valley, protecting amidst the enemy, and communing around the table.

And the same is true for us. God is the perfect Shepherd. He doesn’t leave us on our own. Instead he leads us into blessings, comforts us in our anxiety, protects us in our precarious situations, and communes with us around the table of his love. We are not alone. And the One who is with us is the God of all the Universe.

Read Psalm 23 again, thanking God for being with you through every season of life. Then listen to the song “I Am Not Alone” by Kari Jobe.
