Text: Ephesians 4.1-6

The Apostle Paul gives his list of core virtues that define the Jesus community, and patience is at its center: “As a prisoner for the Lord, then, I urge you to live a life worthy of the calling you have received. Be completely humble and gentle, be patient, bearing with one another in love” (Ephesians 4.1-2).

While patience certainly applies to marriages, child raising, and employment, a chief application in the New Testament writings was the need for patience in the Jesus community.

The reality is, our community is made up of flawed people—none of us is perfect and eventually we will get on each other’s nerves. When we show patience, or bear with one-another, we communicate acceptance and love as brothers and sisters in Christ, just as God has accepted and loved us. In doing so, we point to the Oneness of God.

Today consider this week’s One Big Question: What current relationship necessitates growth in patience? Discuss this with your small group or a close friend and begin today to live with patience and grace.
