Text: 1 Timothy 6.17-19

As we consider various ways in which we can “keep in step with the Spirit” in the area of “goodness,” one way has to be with our finances and possessions. Our money and stuff is to be used in good ways for the benefit of others.

The Apostle Paul, instructing his disciple Timothy on how he’s to lead the church in Ephesus, wrote, “Command them [those who were affluent] to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share” (1 Timothy 6.18). When we do good, by giving generously and sharing what we own with others, we demonstrate God’s goodness to a watching, skeptical world.

While the greater our means for doing good, the greater our obligation, no one is exempt. We all have the capacity to do good with our finances and possessions.

Today, identify one area in which you can increase your generosity. This can include giving something you own to someone who needs it, increasing your support to your favorite charity, or helping a family that is struggling financially. Pick one and do it today!
