Text: Matthew 5.13-16

Sincere, consistent goodness is counter-cultural. As followers of Jesus, everything we are and do—our “good works”—should reflect the goodness of God. When it does, others will see this “light” in the same way an ancient city of white limestone gleams in the sunlight and reflects the light of oil lamps.

Make no mistake, when we live this way it will be noticed because of its contrast with the world around us. A life characterized by goodness is one that gets noticed, “Do everything without grumbling or arguing, so that you may become blameless and pure, ‘children of God without fault in a warped and crooked generation.’ Then you will shine among them like stars in the sky as you hold firmly to the word of life” (Philippians 2.14-16). Light and stars—both stand out against the darkness.

Today, answer this week’s One Big Question: Where is God empowering you to bring goodness to a broken situation? Discuss with your small group or with your family around the dinner table.
