Text: Luke 6.46
How much we’re like the Christ isn’t determined by what we know, it’s determined by what we do. This can be especially challenging because we live in a time of unprecedented knowledge about the Bible. We have access to great Bible preachers and teachers, study Bibles, Internet courses, multiple seminaries, and small groups. Our options to know are almost unlimited. It’s the doing where we struggle.
Jesus was driving right at this issue when he asked in Luke 6.46: “Why do you call me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do what I say?” As Pastor Manion said, “It’s a challenging question.” If Jesus was in West Michigan today, he might phrase the question this way: “Why are you continually learning more about me when you’re not willing to do what you already know?”
Now, we’re not saying knowledge isn’t important, it is. We have to know before we do. But we know enough right now to do. We need to begin practicing the things we already know. One way to do this is to memorize Scripture so we have it instantly available when we need it. Today, as you welcome God into your day, memorize Luke 6.46 as a reminder of the importance of doing.
