Beyond the Weekend

September 18 | Challenging

Text: John 13.1-17

Jesus was clear: to become a disciple—one who helps and encourages others to be like the Christ—is one of the most challenging things we’ll ever do. It will cost us time, money, and energy and will impact us spiritually, emotionally, and physically. Maybe that’s one of the reasons Jesus asks us to truly “estimate the cost” of following him (Luke 14.28-30).

Shortly before his death, Jesus demonstrates to his disciples what it looks like to self-sacrificially meet others’ needs as they become like Jesus. Removing his cloak and wrapping a towel around his waist, he washes their feet of the grime, manure, and dirt—a task typically performed by the lowest of servants.

At the conclusion of this powerful visual aid, Jesus pronounces a blessing on those who are obedient to his teaching, those who do (John 13.17). This series, Like the Christ, has the potential to shape us—as a church and individuals—in powerful ways. But we must be open to the movement of God’s Spirit if that’s to happen.

Today, spend an extended time in prayer asking God to prepare your heart for whatever it is he wants to do. Pray for openness to both hear and do over these next ten weeks.
