While there are some great aspects to our world, we live in a culture with a rather dark side. The phrase “an eye for an eye” often rules the day, creating a crippling cycle of pain. But the Apostle Paul describes a different way. When we exemplify Christ by loving our enemies, we stand out like stars against the dark midnight expanse. When we do good to our enemies, and bless those who curse us, we are refreshingly counter-cultural—and people notice.

If you bear the name “Christian,” you represent Jesus Christ himself. Incredibly, Jesus has tied his reputation to you and me. So, how we love our enemies matters, not only for our own benefit, but for the benefit of a watching and seeking world. Curious onlookers are wondering if Jesus is for real. When we love our enemies it proves the way of Jesus is best. This has an attractive effect on those enslaved to a system of self-protection.

Take a moment to view this news clip showing the incredible response of Christians after the horrendous shootings that took place in Charleston, South Carolina. May we begin to model this kind of love for our enemies in every facet of life.
