Text: Ephesians 5.15-16

I’ve never seen a hearse pull a U-haul. ~ Dee Dee M. Scott, poet

We will only pass this way once. We could go suddenly and, when our time’s up, what we have stays behind. Jesus makes this point in Luke 12.20 when he tells the Parable of the Rich Fool. It matters to God what we do with our bounty before we go. This means the time we have and things we possess are of utmost importance as followers of Jesus (Ephesians 5.15-16). God has given us everything we have on this earth for his eternal purpose. When we finally stand before him we want to hear, “Well done, good and faithful servant.”

As a follower of Jesus, every new day is an opportunity to be radically generous with the gifts God’s given us. When your time’s up, you go only with what you brought at birth (Job 1.21). Your only chance to help Jesus love others and bring them into his eternal kingdom is in the here and now.

Psalm 90.12 says, “Teach us to number our days that we may gain a heart of wisdom.” Today as you meet with God, think about how you will be remembered when your time here is up. Write a short eulogy describing how you would like to be remembered for how you handled your possessions; then listen to God’s voice and start making steps toward radical generosity.
