2 Timothy 3.16-17

The author of 1 and 2 Timothy is the Apostle Paul. In these letters Paul is writing as the experienced minister instructing the younger, growing pastor. He writes from prison, knowing this communication to his protégé Timothy will probably be their last.

His final charge to Timothy is to hold fast to the Scriptures. This is why: “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work” (2 Timothy 3.16-17).

The words of the Bible literally come from the mouth of God, and by them we are thoroughly equipped for every good work. What an incredible gift! Like a coach equipping his team for victory, God uses his Word to guide and train us to live in a way that brings life to us and to those around us.

As you welcome God into your day, take a moment to commit 2 Timothy 3.16-17 to memory. You might write it on a 3×5 card and place it where you’ll come across it often. May these verses compel us to remember that every time we hold our Bibles, or read Scripture on our phones or in an email, we’re literally hearing the voice of God.
