“For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet he did not sin. Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need” (Hebrews 4.15-16).
Kings and priests rarely identify with and understand their subjects. But Jesus didn’t set himself higher than others by making rules impossible to live by. He experienced our troubles, temptations, and pains in the day-to-day struggle of life. He died an agonizing death to make God’s throne approachable.
We can’t point our finger at God and say, “You just don’t understand!”—because he does. We are to come to God’s gracious throne with confidence because we have a representative there—the resurrected Jesus—who empathizes with all our temptations and needs.
Troubles and pain tend to isolate us, but Jesus can relate and knows how to help us. Today, before you lift up your heart in prayer, identify an area you’ve been afraid to bring to God—your most impossible prayer. Then enter his presence with confidence asking for his guidance and help as you allow him to pour out his love on you and your situation.
