December 23 | Everlasting Father

December 23, 2015

Isaiah 9.6

“For to us a child is born, to us a son is given…and he will be called…Everlasting Father” (Isaiah 9.6).

Perhaps no picture of God stirs up emotions more than the picture of him as Father. We all have a father, whether we knew him or not, whether he was nice or a jerk, whether we saw him every day or twice a year. To think about our fathers is to think about an emotional topic, whether happy or sad. Yet, the child in the manger is to be called Everlasting Father—an always family member.

Christmas may feel a little empty for some of us this year. Whether it is a missing father, mother, sister, brother, friend, grandmother, or grandfather, the pain is real. In the midst of our pain, God desires to be our Everlasting Father. God is a good dad.

Matthew 1.22-23 gives Jesus another name, Immanuel—God with us. In the pain and the loneliness, he is with us. He is a good dad who loves us and cares for us. Our good dad longs to hear from us and be with us. Today, as you spend time with your Everlasting Father, take time to journal your gratitude to your good dad.
