January 21 | Cling to God

January 21, 2016

Jeremiah 13.11

Idolatry is about security and significance. The story of the belt helps us realize God is the only one who can provide true security and significance. He can be trusted, he can handle our life troubles (Isaiah 9.6), he’s a loving father who welcomes you into his family (1 John 3.1), and he’s the creator who spoke the world into existence (Psalm 33.9). God can handle it.

Just like a belt clings to a waist, so we’re to cling to God. Clinging to God provides the only lasting security and significance. John 10.3 tells us the followers of Jesus know his voice and follow him. A few verses later we find out Jesus came so we could have abundant life (John 10.10). Jesus provides the ultimate security and significance for those who cling to God—an abundant life.

Because we all cling to something, we’re perpetually worshipping. Only God can bear the weight of our worship. As you spend time with God today, listen to “Christ Is Enough” by Hillsong. May it be the longing of your heart.
