Deuteronomy 6.4-6

Every relationship has a starting point. It’s no different here. If our goal is a family characterized by healthy relationships, we have to start somewhere. Deuteronomy 6.4-6 tells us to start with our heart. Before we can have influence on those around us, before we can lead well, we must start by loving God.

To love the Lord means we choose him for an intimate relationship and we choose to obey his commands. Our love for him is to be wholehearted and is to pervade every aspect of our being and life (“soul” and “strength”). It’s not just what we believe, it’s how we behave. No part of our life is exempt from the impact of God’s love. Behavior shows what we believe.

Behavior is dependent on the condition of our heart. It’s why these commands are “to be on your hearts” (Deuteronomy 6.6). It’s not enough to have God’s commands in a book on our shelf, they must be in our hearts. A great way to do this is with Scripture memory.

Today, as you “press into Jesus,” memorize Deuteronomy 6.5 as a reminder of the importance of your love for God.
