March 11 | Redemption Motivates Purity

March 11, 2016

1 Corinthians 6.9-20

When we were kids, we were taught to treat things people loaned us better than we would want people to treat our stuff. If someone was kind enough to loan us something, we’d better appreciate it and treat it well.

Consider 1 Corinthians 6.9-20. Here Paul exhorts the Corinthians to sexual purity using a unique motivation—they were to remain pure because, in essence, their body is Christ’s.

Think about this for a moment: when Christ redeemed us, he bought all of us. Because our body is his, it is unconscionable for us to be sexually impure. Just like we should never abuse something someone has loaned us, we shouldn’t engage in improper sexual activity.

Instead of disrespecting and defaming God, we should use our body to bring him honor. Our actions either elevate God in the eyes of others or lower his reputation. Because of all he has done for us, it should be our heart’s desire to elevate him.

Maybe we aren’t defiling our body sexually, but we can cheapen it (and God’s reputation) in other ways. Perhaps we’re overeating or drinking too much. Maybe we’ve become addicted to video games, the internet, or our phone.

Today, identify what you’re doing that’s dominating your body and not honoring God’s name. Confess this to God and begin to take action to change by speaking to a spiritually mature Christian friend or contact our care team at care@adabible.org.
