Since we have now been justified by his blood, how much more shall we be saved from God’s wrath through him! ~ Romans 5.9
Our Creator God did not create us for sin. We were meant to reflect his perfect character and Glory. His wrath toward us is centered in his perfect goodness which cannot ignore our wrongdoing. Yet amazingly, God offers himself (Jesus, who is God in the flesh) to appease his own anger.
The story of the cross is a story of substitution. The sins that were mine got transferred to Jesus, and the righteousness of Jesus got transferred to me. It’s a double transfer that satisfies God’s anger.
God’s willingness to see us justified through the death of Jesus, doesn’t mean he now overlooks sin in our life. It means the debt of our sins has been punished and paid for in Jesus—one time—for all sin (1 Peter 3.18).
In Jesus’ time, when a person paid back a debt, “It is finished” was written across the document of debt, indicating it was paid in full. At the crucifixion, the last words uttered from Jesus before he died were “It is finished” (John 19.30).
Jesus himself declared our debt to be paid in full as he offered up his life on our behalf.
