Philippians 3.12-4.1

“But our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ.” – Philippians 3.20

Every day when we wake up, we’re bombarded with needs. We each have our personal needs, but there are also the needs of a child or a spouse, and then it’s off to work and the needs there. The point is, our attention is naturally drawn to the needs we face now. Immediacy wins the day and before we know it, we’ve gone through a whole day simply reacting to needs instead of taking intentional steps into the future.

The Apostle Paul addresses this in his letter to the Philippians saying, “I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which Christ has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 3.14).

Keeping his eyes on eternity, Paul never lets off the gas and lives each moment with eternity in mind. He encourages believers, reminding us our citizenship is in heaven. Our first loyalty is to our heavenly nation, living under the rule and reign of Jesus Christ.

As we consider how we can lift our eyes to look past the immediacy of the needs we encounter today, commit Philippians 3.20 to memory. Write it on a note card and keep it with you throughout your day. As you encounter need after need, remind yourself you’re living for the eternal.
