In Colossians 3 the Apostle Paul describes greed as idolatry (Colossians 3.5). In other words, a person’s all-consuming desire for money can become a God-substitute. But greed isn’t the only false god. Idols are where we willingly spend all our energy and money without giving it a second thought. Author Tim Keller describes idols as usually good, generally unreliable, and often devastating. An idol can be almost anything: family and children, a romantic relationship, work, wealth, or simply being at every party you can manage.
Only God can bear the weight of our worship—everything else will let us down. Only God is worthy of our worship. There are lots of good things, but they should be enjoyed as gifts, not served as masters. Only God alone will satisfy our souls when we place all our affections on him.
