“The Son is the image of the invisible God” (Colossians 1.15a). There is one perfect representation of God and it’s not a statue of a cow or a hawk. It’s the person of Jesus the Christ. When we worship Jesus, we’re worshiping the image of God in his fullness and not reducing him. We’re worshiping God the way God desires to be worshiped.
Jesus came to earth, was tempted just like us, lived a perfect life then gave himself up as the offering for our sin. Verse 20 says he made “peace through his blood.” We must not reduce God into a picture easy for us to manipulate, contain or understand. Instead worship Jesus, “the radiance of God’s glory and exact representation of his being” (Hebrews 1.3).
When we worship Jesus, we’re obeying every aspect of the second command. Acknowledging he’s already present as we invite him into our lives. Our worship provides an example to those around us and signals our intention for those who come after us to worship him as well. We worship him not only for ourselves but also to point others to him.
