When we open our Bibles at the beginning and start to read, it’s not long before we encounter history’s first “theft.” In today’s passage, Adam and Eve take what isn’t theirs and use it how they want. In telling Adam and Even not to eat from the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil, God is saying, “This is mine. It’s not yours.”
Because of this “theft,” which is called The Fall, sin enters the world and mars every situation and relationship. There’s no part of our existence that’s left unaffected by this theft—no part of us that lies outside the bondage of sin and death.
Because of their disobedience, Adam and Eve were separated from God. They now needed God’s help and his grace to restore this relationship. It’s true for us as well. Not only are we sinners at birth, because we “inherit” Adam’s sin, but we’ve all sinned ourselves. We all have committed theft in some way.
Without the help of a “mediator,” we have no way (because we’re sinners) to secure a relationship with God (who is perfect and holy). That’s where Jesus plays an incredible role, “For there is one God and one mediator between God and mankind, the man Christ Jesus” (1 Timothy 2.5).
