David, chosen by God to replace the first king of Israel, became a direct ancestor of Jesus. He wrote many songs, now preserved in the book of Psalms. Loved by God for his deep and enduring faith, he’s described as “a man after God’s own heart.” Even so, he made a huge mistake concerning the seventh command, “Do not commit adultery.”
Read the account of the story in 2 Samuel 11-12. From high in his palace David saw a beautiful woman, Bathsheba, bathing on her roof and was tempted. Instead of turning away, he began the downward spiral of lust: first enquiring who she was, inviting her to the palace, then sleeping with her. It gets worse. Finding out she’s pregnant, he manipulates to get her husband killed so he can marry her.
“But the thing David had done displeased the Lord” (2 Samuel 11.27). God sent the high priest Nathan to confront David, who admits his failing and repents. Read Psalm 51 for his song of repentance.
You may be suffering from mistakes you’ve made when tempted. David’s story shows God knows our failings and offers forgiveness. David found peace through confession and forgiveness. His story is an example of wrong behavior resulting in right relationship with God.
