The command to Sabbath includes the goodness of work. God calls man to work, placing Adam in the garden to “work it and take care of it” (Genesis 2.15). A proper Christian worldview sees work as honorable and good because God has given humanity dominion over creation (Genesis 1.26).
One definition of work is “bringing order to chaos.” God’s work in creation brings order to chaos. Work is not a result of sin, but preceded the entrance of sin into the world. It’s not a necessary evil, but a part of who we are. No matter your job, your work matters to God.
The Apostle Paul understood the value of work. He wrote to the Colossians, “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving” (Colossians 3.23-24). Paul also criticized a life of idleness, saying the one who is unwilling to work should not even eat (2 Thessalonians 3.10-12).
Today, use your remaining time in the Chair to commit your day and work to God. Release it to him, so he can accomplish his work through what you are doing. Remember, all work should be done for an audience of one—God.
