September 2 | Jesus’ Stress

September 2, 2016

Psalm 22.14-18

Jesus was God in the flesh who experienced all of the hurts, fears, and temptations we have. “For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses” (Hebrews 4.15). It’s critical to understand that God not only cares for us when we’re stressed, but he totally “gets it.” Jesus was no stranger to suffering yet continually submitted his own will to God’s control and plan.

It can be easy to ignore Jesus’ faith because after all, he was God and wouldn’t God be able to withstand a little earthly stress? Don’t be too hasty to overlook his humanness. Philippians 2.6-8 tells us he “who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death—even death on a cross!”

At his darkest moment on the cross, Jesus used Psalm 22 to express his stress and also his trust in God.

Today as you meet with God, listen to the song “Praise You in This Storm” by Casting Crowns and know that when you are experiencing stress and trials, God will bring you through and has “Every tear [you’ve] cried in [his] hand, and never left [your] side.”
