We have a tendency to view our work as either sacred or secular—as if there’s something fundamentally different about going to work at a church versus clocking in at a design firm. This isn’t the case. As followers of Jesus we represent him in every arena of work regardless of the environment. In this way, all work is sacred and we’re all ambassadors as we take the message of Jesus into a foreign culture. We all step into work environments where people will view or interact with our work. The weighty reality is, we have the potential of misrepresenting Jesus and his message by not doing our work with our whole heart. If an employee consistently takes long breaks, shows up late for work, or steals product, someone interested in the Jesus message might be turned off if that person claims to be a Christian. When we do our work as “unto God” (Colossians 3.23) we validate the goodness of the gospel.
Today ask yourself this question: If someone bumped into my work, would they be drawn to know Jesus more? As you represent Jesus well, know that people are curiously watching, wondering if the Jesus we believe in is real and worth it. One way we validate the gospel is by showing up to work, day in and day out, bringing our whole hearts and working wholly unto God.
