Colossians 4.5

Paul instructs the Colossian believers to “be wise in the way you act toward outsiders.” Guest speaker John Dickson helped us understand this means acting in a godly way, really treating people well. How we live matters. People are watching. If we’re to change the world for Christ, our actions must reveal a life worth living.

There is something appealing about selfless acts. Perhaps this is why newscasts do human interest stories. They may hope publicizing someone’s selfless act will inspire other selfless acts. These stories stand in stark contrast to a self-centered culture.

Paul wants the Jesus community in Colossae to impact the first century culture through selfless loving acts, just as we should to the twenty-first century culture. The small things we do can have a large influence.

Consider the small things you do (or hope to do) for others and pray God will use it for a large impact. Maybe this is writing an encouraging note, taking a friend to lunch, covering a shift for a co-worker, babysitting for a widow, or grabbing an intern a coffee.

Don’t underestimate the power of a small act of kindness to turn someone’s eyes toward Christ.
