November 30 | A New Song

November 30, 2016

Colossians 3.16
The Apostle Paul instructs the believers in Colossae to let the message of Christ dwell in their hearts. The message of Christ is two-fold: the grace of Jesus (the gospel) and the way of Jesus (Jesus’ instructions on how to live).

The believers are supposed to hold these two ideas together. We are saved based solely on the grace of God through Jesus, but we’ve been called to live radically different as unto God.

Uniquely, Paul uses the word “dwell” regarding how to hold these ideas. This word brings the idea of living in a home or taking up residence. The message of Jesus was not supposed to be a weekly religious activity—it was intended to take up residence in every aspect of our lives.

It is easy to relegate the message of Christ to a weekly church service. It’s like only inviting Jesus into the foyer of your home. But he wants to influence every room, closet, nook, and cranny.

One way Paul suggests we do this is to sing songs about the grace and way of Jesus. Music powerfully cements ideas into our hearts and minds. When the message of Christ dwells richly in our hearts, we cannot help but respond with gratitude and thanksgiving.

Today, take a minute to listen to the song “All I Have Is Christ” by Erin Hill. This powerful song speaks of Jesus’ incredible grace and how we should follow the way of Jesus. As you listen, allow this “new song” to take up residence in your life as you respond with a heart of gratitude to the God who rescued you.
