Beyond the Weekend

December 20 | Savior, Messiah, and Lord

December 20, 2016

Luke 2.10-11

It’s a dark night no different than other nights for the shepherds guarding their sheep. Suddenly there’s blinding light and standing before them is a terrifying being—like nothing they’ve ever seen—with an astounding message, “I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord.”

The angel’s description is very specific. This baby will be their Savior who was predicted in Genesis when Adam and Eve disobeyed God and sin entered the world. He’s the Savior Isaiah foretold, “But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds we are healed” (Isaiah 53.5).

The angel also declares this baby to be the Messiah, or Anointed One, God promised to send to free Israel from their sin. “The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is on me, because the Lord has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor” (Isaiah 61.1).

And because the word Lord means Master, these humble shepherds are invited by the angel to go and kneel before this baby—the baby who will bring peace to those who come to know him as Savior and Master. Although “Hark the Herald Angels Sing” is very familiar, listen to the Hillsong version. Be sure to focus on the words as you rejoice at the arrival of our Savior, Messiah, and Lord.
