Ephesians 6.21-22

One of the assignments Paul gives Tychicus is to carry a letter to the church in Ephesus. The job was important because first century letters were authoritative substitutes for the author’s presence.

Yet, Tychicus wasn’t merely a delivery man who pulled up to the church, rang the doorbell, dropped off the letter and went home. In Ephesians 6.22, we read one of the reasons Paul sent Tychicus to Ephesus was so “that he may encourage you.” Tychicus didn’t just give them a motivational speech, tell them they were doing great and then head home. Instead, Tychicus was able to convey Paul’s heart and mind.

Tychicus spent a ton of time with Paul, even travelling around Asia Minor with him. Tychicus encourages the church by knowing how Paul would respond in certain situations. He encourages them by helping them follow the Christ.

As Pastor Jeff Manion tells us in the clip below from the weekend sermon, there are two elements of encouragement. First, life is challenging. Second, God can be trusted. These two truths should shape our encouragement.

Today, take a step toward joining Tychicus as a person of encouragement. Send a note of encouragement or an email to a family member or friend. Be specific in your encouragement. Then, pray for the person you’ve encouraged by asking God to meet whatever need they may have.
