January 26 | Cheerful Giving

January 26, 2017

Revelation 3.20

The remedy, when financial stability begins to pull you away from your faith and trust in God, is generous and cheerful giving. It’s a willingness to give your best time and treasure to God for him to use the way he desires. Giving generously isn’t an earthly concept. It comes straight from the heart of God.

Paul writes to Jesus followers in Corinth, “Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver” (2 Corinthians 9.7). God loves cheerful giving, because he’s a cheerful giver. Watch the clip below from last weekend’s sermon as Pastor Manion describes the way God gives.

And God’s ultimate generosity is shown by giving his own son to save us (John 3.16). That same Son is knocking on the door in Revelation 3.20, offering to come in to the self-sufficient church of Laodicea, desiring a relationship with them if they’ll just open the door.

He is the author and model of generosity that comes from a heart of love and forgiveness. Our own generosity needs to come from the same heart. Love for God, and his generosity to us, should spill over into the lives of other people.

Today, as you meet with him, thank God for his example and then ask him to help you pursue generous giving through a thankful and cheerful heart that will draw others closer to him. Ask him to show you how to give of your time or treasure in a way that is over and beyond what you would normally do.
