Arguably one of the most recognizable characters in the Bible, the Apostle Paul was powerfully used by God to launch the Jesus movement to the Greek-speaking world and authored 13 books in the New Testament of our Bible. But he didn’t do it alone. Throughout Paul’s ministry, he was surrounded and supported by a huge team of Jesus followers.
Today’s passage, Colossians 4, pays tribute to many of those people: Tychicus the faithful, Nympha the generous, John Mark the reconciled, and Luke the doctor and lifelong companion. Each of these people, and many more, played crucial roles in the success of Paul’s missionary work. He couldn’t have done it without them.
This week we’ll take a closer look at Luke, the doctor and faithful friend. But before we do, it’s important to remember that none of us lives and serves alone. We desperately need each other. This team, the Body of Christ, is uniquely designed to serve and build itself up in love. God has uniquely designed each of us to meet the needs of others in this church family. Beyond that, we were also designed to need the Church. When we separate ourselves from this community, we starve ourselves of the encouragement and fellowship we need.
