Paul is in a tough spot. His ministry has come to a screeching halt as he sits in a prison. Yet, in the midst of this difficult situation, Paul writes that Epaphras’ report brings him “delight” (Colossians 2.5). Epaphras encourages Paul through his words when Paul is most in need of encouragement.
We often underestimate the power of words. Our words have the power of life and death (Proverbs 18.21). Jesus tells us we will have to give an account of what we say (Matthew 12.36). Epaphras serves by using his words to encourage Paul.
This weekend, Pastor Bob King challenged us to write down the name of a person who needs to hear encouraging words and follow through on encouraging them. Perhaps there’s a child who needs to hear “I’m proud of you. Did you know you are really good at _____?” Maybe there’s a parent who needs to hear you say thanks for all they’ve done over the years and how much you appreciate the sacrifices they made. Maybe there’s a member of your small group who is dealing with a tough work situation and needs to hear how impressed you are with how they are handling it. Far too often the words people hear are negative. If you haven’t followed through on Pastor Bob King’s challenge from the service, do it today. If you already have, double up on encouragement this week by encouraging someone else.
