February 28 | Aid Stations

February 28, 2017

Mark 6.31-32

Then, because so many people were coming and going that they did not even have a chance to eat [Jesus] said to them, ‘Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest.’ So they went away by themselves in a boat to a solitary place (Mark 6.31-32).

Jesus understood the need for regenerative rest. When the crowds just kept coming and coming he saw his disciples needed some down time with him. Those who work hard need to rest hard. In Matthew 11.28 Jesus says to come to him and he will teach you and give you rest for your soul. A daily walk with Jesus is like an aid station for marathon runners.

Pastor Manion, a frequent marathon runner, has learned not drinking water during the race results in severe headaches not quickly remedied. Most marathons give maps marking aid stations so runners can plan ahead. Jesus is the most satisfying gift God gives us to find rest. It begins at the cross. When we accept him, time alone with him is one of the best remedies for emotional and spiritual fatigue.

Today as you spend time in the Chair, consider Jesus’ example of getting away for some rest and refreshment. As suggested on page 58 of day 7 in Dream Big, Think Small, pull out your calendar and plan some “aid station” times in your schedule. Drink before you are thirsty.
