March 1 | The Art of Rest

March 1, 2017

Deuteronomy 5.13-14

Then God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it he rested from all the work of creating that he had done (Genesis 2.3).

The art of rest comes straight from the heart of God who rested and rejoiced after six days of creation. It’s doubtful he was tired, but God models to us that resting is simply enjoying what he has created. Think about that.

Resting isn’t a reward, nor does it mean you’re lazy. To rest you don’t have to feel tired. It means God made you for more than achievement. He wants you to receive and enjoy his gifts with thankfulness. When enjoying what he’s given you, your heart opens to connecting with him. It’s no surprise he made resting (Sabbath) one of his commandments.

An obvious place this resting can happen is through dialing into God through a church service. Another could be relaxing with a book, enjoying a walk or playing with your kids. The key is enjoying who God is, by worshipping and thanking him for what he has given you.

On page 63 of day 8 of Dream Big, Think Small, Pastor Manion asks, “How could Sabbath rest bring greater balance to your life?” As you pray for God’s guidance, write down a few simple steps you can take to regularly get away from your busyness.

This sermon series is a companion to the book by Jeff Manion, Dream Big, Think Small.
