Deuteronomy 5.12

When you slow your pace to enjoy God’s goodness and drink in his creation, you discover a life-giving Sabbath rhythm – a rhythm of work punctuated by rest that helps you continue on the journey. ~ Jeff Manion [DBTS, pg. 70]

The Jews had been wandering in the wilderness for 40 years, and are about to enter the Promised Land when God reiterates the Ten Commandments. In Deuteronomy 5.12 he reminds them to observe the Sabbath day and keep it set apart. They are about to face days of danger and hard work as they set about establishing homes, farms, and work places and defending themselves from enemies. God needs them to understand how important it is to their emotional and spiritual health for rest to be a priority.

Life in our culture is fast-paced and demanding. You will cease to be your best if you just constantly hammer away without intermittent refreshment. Pastor Manion suggests we find a pattern or rhythm of rest in the midst of our busyness. One of the gifts God has given us to rest are refreshing people—friends who breathe life and positivity in the midst of negativity. Watch the clip below from the weekend message as Pastor Manion shares a story of needed friendship in the life of King David.

Today is Day 9 of Dream Big, Think Small. Prayerfully take some time to complete the challenge on page 71. Identify what activities (or non-activities) quiet your spirit and draw your heart toward rest and activities that are barriers. Consider where you can begin.

This sermon series is a companion to the book by Jeff Manion, Dream Big, Think Small.
