Psalm 23.3

After major events or an unbroken string of demanding challenges, the soul pleads for repair. It shouldn’t surprise us that an emotional letdown awaits us after we pour ourselves into a demanding season. ~ Jeff Manion [DBTS, pg. 73]

Sometimes you don’t realize how tired you are until you stop moving. When you’ve been working hard and going 90 miles an hour and then stop to rest, there’s often an emotional let-down or feeling of emptiness. Pouring yourself out over-and-over brings fatigue. It’s certainly not selfish to take care of yourself. You need to get refueled before you can continue to serve and help others. When you’re worn out, you don’t have much to give.

Pastor Manion cautions that when you’re exhausted be aware of activities that will still leave you drained. What’s healthy and healing isn’t always what we first head for. Decide ahead of time those things that allow God to restore your soul, fill your spirit and refresh you before you’re worn out and move toward the time-wasters. Take a look at some suggestions on page 78 of Dream Big, Think Small.

Take a few moments today to engage the challenge on page 79 (day 10 of Dream Big, Think Small).  Ask God to help you think through two lists: a few activities that restore your soul, and those that tend to be time-wasters. Be ready after those events that drain you.

This sermon series is a companion to the book by Jeff Manion, Dream Big, Think Small.
