Proverbs 4.23

We are only what we are in the dark; all the rest is reputation. What God looks at is what we are in the dark – The imaginations of our minds; the thoughts of our heart; the habits of our bodies; these are the things that mark us in God’s sight. ~ Oswald Chambers [quoted in DBTS pg. 154]

Buildings are only as strong as their foundations. Getting a foundation square and level is an important step. For us, our “foundation” is our heart. The work we put into forming and maintaining the health of our heart will sustain our lives.

We must regularly examine our heart to know where to direct the maintenance. Often, our first impulse is to ignore or cover up our weaknesses. This only leads to worsening problems. An honest assessment followed by action will strengthen our lives and increase our impact for God on those around us.

Today, in Day 22 (page 156) of DBTS, reflect on your foundation. Where are the cracks and weak points? Maybe it’s anger, addiction, cynicism, anxiety, reclusiveness or lust. Develop a plan to work on those areas.

Jot down the names of some people you can enlist to come alongside you as you work on your heart. Often the work in some areas requires more than you think you can do on your own. Do not be afraid to reach out to a trusted Christian friend for help or contact our care department at care@adabible.org to start a conversation.
