Beyond the Weekend

March 29 | The Big Event

March 29, 2017

Romans 8.28

It is highly unlikely that total transformation will occur in a weekend. It is certain that the most profound growth will be a by-product of work we do after the Big Event. ~ Jeff Manion [DBTS, pg. 195]

Pastor Manion reminds us that the Big Event frequently serves as the catalyst for significant movement in our lives, but it does not grow us up. Marriage conferences, church summer camps, financial seminars, short-term mission trips, and weekend church services are all extremely important in our walk with God.

However, it’s the decisions we make after the event that lead to growth and maturity. Marriages strengthen when we apply what we learned from the marriage conference. We grow in generosity and stewardship applying the wisdom of the financial seminar. Faithfulness in our walk with Jesus occurs by listening attentively to the sermon and grabbing a truth or two to practice. The opportunity for genuine growth begins once the Big Event is over.

Turn to page 195 in Dream Big, Think Small and reflect on the following questions related to the last Big Event you attended: What were your hopes going into the event? Did the event propel you to head in a new direction, or were you too overwhelmed to make changes or implement any steps for action? What is one small thing you can do today—and tomorrow and the next day and the next—to effect lasting change in your life?

This sermon series is a companion to the book by Jeff Manion, Dream Big, Think Small.
