March 30 | The Wall and the Weeds

March 30, 2017

Proverbs 24.30-31

Realize that you don’t have to do anything for a property to fall into disrepair.  All you have to do is leave it alone. The seasons take their toll. Sufficient neglect guarantees deterioration of a house and life. ~ Jeff Manion [DBTS, pg. 196]

Using simple imagery, Pastor Manion highlights how weeds can overtake our lives. At times, we soberly discover we are overcome by envy, bitterness, disturbing rage, or recurring sinful habits. King Solomon observes this in Proverbs 24.30-31, “I went past the field of a sluggard. . . thorns had come up everywhere, the ground was covered with weeds, and the stone wall was in ruins.”

Weeds do not need to be planted—they grow uninvited. Apathy is all that is required for weeds to overtake our lives. Yet God is often willing to use these moments of discovery as a wake-up call to draw us closer to him.

Take some time today to complete the challenge on page 201 of Dream Big, Think Small. Can you detect some weeds you need to pull from the soil of your own life? A grudge you are nursing? A thorny habit that threatens to take over the soil of your heart? A cancerous attitude that could cripple your spirit if you allow it to thrive? A key relationship that is slipping away one day at a time? Identify the steps you need to take to remove these weeds.

This sermon series is a companion to the book by Jeff Manion, Dream Big, Think Small.
