Beyond the Weekend

April 3 | Another Prophet

Deuteronomy 18.15-18

In the middle of the Old Testament book of Deuteronomy, which powerfully reviews God’s covenant with Israel, God makes an amazing promise. As our guest speaker Brad Gray taught this past weekend, the great lawgiver Moses prophesied that one day God would “raise up for them a prophet like you [Moses] from among their fellow Israelites” (Deuteronomy 18.18). While Moses led Israel out of slavery from Egypt, this “second Moses” would have a greater mission—to save people from their slavery to sin.

This “second Moses” is, of course, Jesus. While Moses came to lead Israel to freedom from Egypt, Jesus came to destroy both sin and its controlling power in our lives. All too often, we get caught back in “Egypt”—a metaphor for all those things that enslave us. Our “Egypt” can be debt, addictions, busyness, fear, bitterness, or any of dozens more sins which easily enslave us.

At the conclusion of the service, Brad asked each of us to write on the “pyramid card” the one thing in our life that keeps us in Egypt. As you welcome God into your week, remember what you wrote and, again, commit this to the Lord.

Pray a prayer similar to this, “Dear God, I again confess the sin of _______________ to you. I recognize that Jesus died to free me from this sin that enslaves me. Through your Spirit, I recognize you’ve freed me from this sin. I open my hands to receive your power to live in freedom from it.”
