John 10.7-10

Using shepherds and sheep as familiar metaphors, Jesus clearly states one of the reasons he came is to be our Rescuer, “…that they [his sheep, or believers] may have life, and have it to the full” (John 10.10). In contrast to imposters (who come to steal and destroy), Jesus came to not only bring spiritual life to people, but he came to bring the best quality of life to them. The sheep in Jesus’ sheep pen are able to flourish as they enjoy every legitimately good thing possible. It is the best possible life!

We can choose to never enter this relationship with Jesus or, once we do, live contrary to all the Good Shepherd provides. There are many “thieves and robbers” (John 10.8) who’d like nothing more than to damage and destroy in any way they can. We can miss the “full life” Jesus offers either through our own decisions or the actions of others. As any shepherd will tell you, sheep are always in danger.

As you welcome God into your day, and receive with open hands the “full life” Jesus offers, memorize John 10.10 as a way of reminding you of all that Jesus offers. Write the verse on a 3 x 5 card and place it where you can refer to it multiple times today.
