John 20.30-31

Jesus performed many other signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not recorded in this book. But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name (John 20.30-31).

These words serve as the very reason John recorded his account of the life of Jesus. The purpose: that we might believe Jesus is the Messiah! And as we see throughout the book of John, each person has their own journey of coming to faith, often arriving at that faith through different timeframes and with different evidence. While Thomas needed to see the wounds and Mary only needed him to say her name, each of us is called to believe that Jesus is the resurrected Messiah.

Faith doesn’t require “checking your brain at the door.” While those who compiled the story of Jesus wrote so we would know its reliability, our hearts can take time to fully surrender to God. But that’s the end result by which we find life. We’re absolutely dependent on Jesus to rescue us from our sin. And he will if we place our faith in him.

Today, take a minute to memorize John 20.30-31. May you believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and by believing find life in his name.
