Hosea 2.8-13

During Hosea’s time, the people turn from God to idols hoping for good weather to grow crops that will bring them comfort and wealth. But God is not going to bless their idolatry. If they think he will keep his promises to them while they’re praying to false gods—they are sadly mistaken. God sends a drought. He takes away the very thing Israel leaves him for because God is a wounded lover like Hosea—and wants what he loves back.

Idolatry is serious and seductive. It’s something we can gradually fall into just like the Israelites. Often we make rationalizations and don’t even see it.  God is not obligated to get our idolatry to work. Because of that, he may bring a “drought” to show us we need him and him alone.

It’s not beyond God to shake up a career, end a relationship, remove savings or derail our luxury vacations because we’re trusting in those things for security and value more than we’re trusting him.  Watch below as Senior Pastor Jeff Manion explains how God uses droughts in in our lives to draw us to him.

If some things in your life are running amok, pray these verses and ask God if he’s trying to get your attention. “Search me God and know my heart; test me and know my thoughts. Point out anything in me that [is idolatry and] offends you, and lead me along the path of everlasting life.” ~ Psalm 139.23-24 NLT
