June 28 | Anger at Sin

June 28, 2017

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE

“The word of the Lord came to Jonah son of Amittai: ‘Go to the great city of Ninevah and preach against it, because its wickedness has come up before me.’”

Read the entire passage: Jonah 1.1-3

TODAY’S MESSAGE

God is not okay with sin. He was not okay with it in Ninevah and he’s not okay with it today, “The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of people, who suppress the truth by their wickedness” (Romans 1.18). It was his anger at the sin of Ninevah that prompted him to send Jonah.

In some respects, we want God to be angry at sin. We want him to be angry at people who hurt kids, engage in sex trafficking, take advantage of the elderly and steal. We’re angry at these things and we want God to be angry as well.

But we’re probably not so desirous that God be angry at us for our sin. We hope he’s okay when we gossip, decide to move in with our boyfriend (girlfriend), misreport our income or lie to our supervisor.

We need to understand that God’s anger is a righteous anger, a “level” anger, that’s just as angry at our sin as that of Ninevah. Jonah’s job was to give Ninevah a “wake-up call.”

IN YOUR CHAIR TIME TODAY

Maybe today is the day you need a “wake-up call” to God’s forgiveness. Achieved when Jesus died on the cross, he “satisfied” God’s anger and experienced God’s wrath so we wouldn’t have to (Romans 8.1-4). Or maybe there’s a part of your life that needs to be in obedience to God. Use this “wake-up call” to move away from sin and toward becoming like Jesus.
