TODAY’S MESSAGE

God’s first instruction for the king is not to have too many horses. This instruction has nothing to do with polo or horse shows but everything to do with power. In the ancient near east, horses meant power. Horses were the ultimate weapon on the battlefield. God is telling the king to trust in him and not in military might.

While most of us aren’t overly concerned with horses and paddocks—power and success is another thing. We all like to be in control of our life and want to be successful. Just like God wanted Israel’s king to trust him, he wants us to trust him. He wants us to rely on him for our future and not look to culture to tell us what success looks like.

IN YOUR CHAIR TIME TODAY

Take a moment to think about what you’re leaning on for success. Perhaps success for you is doing whatever it takes to climb the corporate ladder. Maybe success is gossiping and backstabbing your way to being the most popular person in your class or social circle. While there’s nothing wrong with holding a good job or being well liked, the real question is whether you are doing things your way or God’s way. Honestly consider how you define success. What changes do you need to make to continually rely more on God and less on yourself?
