July 14 | One Throne, Two Hearts

July 14, 2017

TODAY ‘S SCRIPTURE

But now your kingdom will not endure; the Lord has sought out a man after his own heart and appointed him leader of his people, because you have not kept the Lord’s command.

Read the entire passage: 1 Samuel 13.1-15

TODAY’S MESSAGE

Two kings—Saul and David. Both had the opportunity to rule over Israel. And they couldn’t have been more different. Saul feared the people while David feared God. Saul was given to fits of selfish rage and pity parties. David reigned with God’s authority. Saul elevated himself while David stripped down to his skivvies and dance unashamedly in the presence of the returning Ark of the Covenant.

Both men had authority—something we all crave. But only one of them had a character that reflected God’s heart. God calls David “a man after his own heart” (1 Samuel 13.14). This doesn’t mean David was perfect. But it means that David pursued a genuine relationship with God. He interacted with God from a place of humility and gratitude.

IN YOUR CHAIR TIME TODAY

We all possess differing levels of authority. These are a gift from God. However, what truly matters at the end the day is our character. At the core of our character should be humility and gratitude. Everything we have, including any possible success, is from God’s hand.

Write out a prayer of gratitude today like one of King David’s Psalms (such as Psalm 8). Let your prayer acknowledge that everything you have and are is from him. Then ask Him to help you honor and fear him alone just like David.
